Waste management and treatment

L’ANGed ended the operation of the controlled landfill of El Gonna in Agareb which has reached its design capacity. In fact, this landfill came into operation since April 2008 and has been used for the technical burial of all household waste and similar of the Governorate of Sfax.
Selon la réglementation nationale en vigueur, notamment, la loi cadre des déchets 41-96 dans son Article 23, il y a lieu de réaménager le site de la décharge et de le remettre dans son état initial de façon à éviter toutes pollution ou nuisance à la santé publique et à l’environnement.
In fact, closing a landfill doesn't simply mean leaving it abandoned. Decomposition byproducts are produced long after closure; therefore, long-term planning and maintenance are needed to reduce risks to cities after closure.
It is therefore necessary to establish a management plan for the closure of the landfill of El Gonna which allows to protect the environment and to safeguard the natural resources and the hygiene of the environment, to follow the evolution of the conditions of the landfill after its closure and the state of its environment as well as to integrate it, as much as possible, in its natural and human environment to support a later safe use for other purposes.
It is within this framework that the study of rehabilitation and closure of the controlled landfill of household and similar waste of El Gonna in Agareb.
In order to protect the environment and to safeguard the natural resources and the hygiene of the environment and in application of the framework law of the waste 41-96, ANGed decided to close and rehabilitate the controlled landfill of household and assimilated waste of El Gonna in Agareb.
This requires the elaboration of a study for the closure, rehabilitation and integration of the landfill in its environment.
